The 2" Carriers Every
Right/Left pair of 2" Filter Carriers include a plastic protective case
for the Carriers as shown in the image. The Main Filter Switch Housing
has a Right and Left entry slot. The "R" Carrier may only be inserted
into the right slot and the "L" Carrier in the left slot of the Filter
Switch Housing. First, the small hex screw must be backed out slightly
with the included hex tool so that the filter can drop into the
Carrier. The filter should be inserted thread-side first (facing down), and then the
small plastic hex screw is gently tightened a bit to retain the filter
within the Carrier. Note: If the Filter Threads are so long that they
extend below the bottom surface of the Carrier, the Filter may be
inserted thread-side facing upward. Thread-side down position is preferable
because the hex screw used to retain the filter within the Carrier generally has more filter cell surface area to interact with
for retention purposes.
How Many Pairs?
Certainly, the purpose of buying your Denkmeier Filter Switch is
that it makes using filters easy, adds protection, prevents dew from
forming on them, and most of all, encourages you to view objects with your filters!
It would be inconvenient to remove your 2" Filters from the Carriers
because you wanted to load in alternate filters! In fact, we designed
the Carriers for the purpose of permanently housing your filters. The
plastic hex screw was incorporated because we know that you would
prefer to not mar your filter cell during retention within the Carrier.
We assumed that because you realized the significance of the convenience
factor, you would want a Carrier for every filter that you owned. In
this way, the Carrier itself can be loaded into and unloaded from the
Filter Switch and kept in the plastic storage case when not being used. The Filter would
not have to be removed from the Carrier in order the exchange it for another filter. We suggest buying enough carriers at the time that you purchase a Filter Switch so that all of your filters may be loaded into Carriers. We sell these Carriers at our cost.
1.25" Filters
The 2" Carriers will not only accommodate 2" Filters, but if you
use 1.25" filters, they can be loaded in the 1.25" Step-Down
Adapters and then the Step-Down Adapters can be loaded into the 2"
Carriers.
Example: You have four 1.25" color
filters that you use occasionally for viewing certain planetary features,
and a 1.25" Hydrogen Beta that you use for viewing the Horsehead
Nebula. You also have a 2" UHC and a 2" OIII Filter. You may buy another
2" Filter in the near future such as a broadband deepsky nebula filter. What
optional extra Carriers should you buy?
In the above case, we would recommend that you purchase four
1.25" Step-Down Adapters at $8 each. You should purchase 3 additional 2"
Carrier Pairs. In this way, you can do the following: Load the four
1.25" Filters into the Step-Down Adapters. Load those Step-Down
Adapters with their 1.25" filters into four 2" Carriers (2 pairs) where they may
be stored in the 2" Carrier plastic cases. In this way, they are ready
to load into the Filter Switch Housing at anytime.
Since the Filter Switch already includes two 2" Carriers that are shipped installed within the Filter Switch, you have
both the 2" OIII and the UHC taken care of. They will be loaded into the
included Carriers and kept in the Filter Switch Housing*. You now have an extra pair of 2" Carriers in case you buy additional 2" Filters. Or, a friend may want to compare his OIII to your OIII! In this case, you have a spare 2" Carrier and you may load his OIII into one Carrier, and yopur OIII into the opposite Carrier. Load them into the Filter Switch and compare their performance on a deepsky object.
*Since the
Carriers help to keep an internal spring clip in the proper position
within the Filter Switch, we do recommend that at least one 2" Carrier
be kept in the Filter Switch at a given time. Therefore,
if both 2" Filter Carriers are to be changed out, we recommend that the
Right Carrier be changed, and then the Left or visa versa, rather than
removing both carriers at once. It simply helps to keep the spring clip
in its proper position. This will be readily apparent to Joe when he
removes both 2" Carriers at once. It will not damage the system, but
the spring clip will droop and become visible through the Housing main
aperture. The Carriers serve as a means to keep the spring clip in
place and the spring clip serves as a means to create proper friction
against the 2" Carriers so that they move smoothly within the Filter
Switch Housing.
