How Does The Power x Switch Operate?
Denkmeier Optical, Inc. produced the first Multi-Purpose
Optical Corrector Systems (OCS) for Binoviewer use. What does this
mean? While there were some existing solid-state correctors that
transferred focal planes through binoviewer lightpaths, Denkmeier
Optical created a modular system that could operate at multiple
magnifications by removing, or adding an optical element. The
modularity also enabled Refractor users to thread part of the OCS into
the diagonal on the telescope-side, and into the binoviewer nosepiece on the
observer-side. This allowed the diagonal itself to act as the spacer
between the optical components of the OCS. These important innovations are covered
in one of our patent applications filed with the United States Patent
Office (USPTO Lederman/Dankmeyer). Because of the modularity of the
OCS optical components, when the optic closest to the binoviewer was removed by
replacing the nosepiece of the binoviewer containing an optic, with a
hollow non-optical nosepiece, magnification increased. The focal plane
still transversed the binoviewer lightpath but higher power resulted.
Introduce the binoviewer-side optic once again and power was reduced.
This became the foundation for our Multi-Purpose OCS System. We
then realized that automatic removal or introduction of these optical
components could create instant magnification changes! Hence, our
Petent Pending Power x Switch and now the new patent Pending Power x
Switch Star Diagonals.
Newtonians
If you currently own a Standard Newtonian Package, you may add
the single or dual arm Power x Switch to your system. It is important
to note that the nosepiece with optic that is part of the 1.25" and 2"
Newtonian OCS and that threads directly into your binoviewer must
be replaced with a nosepiece without an optic in order for the Power x
Switch to become operational. Nosepieces that contained no optic were
supplied with all Standard and Denk II Packages early on but if you do
not have one, an option to add a 1.25" or a 2" Hollow Nosepiece is
available at checkout in this section.
Newtonian Single Arm Power x Switch $199
This allows your Newtonian to achieve two instant
magnifications. 2.5X is high power and the Power x Switch Arm is moved
to the "OUT" position. For 1.2X, The Power x Switch Arm is moved to the
"IN" position. It w orks
in conjunction with your existing middle spacer tube and outer-end
1.25" OCS
Cell that enters your Newtonian focuser first. Again, the
nosepiece-side of the complete Newtonian OCS
with optic that threads into the binoviewer must be replaced with the
Hollow 1.25" nosepiece before the assembled OCS is threaded into the
Power x Switch. This product is the same Power x Switch found in the
Standard Newtonian Power x Switch Package.
The Dual Arm Newtonian Power x Switch may also be added to the Standard
binoviewer and works with the 1.25" Newtonian OCS in the same way that
the Single Arm Power x Switch does. However, three magnifications are now
instant. 1.4X, 2X and 2.5X. Again, the 1.25" Newtonian OCS must
have the Hollow 1.25" nosepiece attached to the middle spacer tune and
the end 1.25" OCS Cell or the Power x Switch will not function properly.
Newtonian Dual Arm Power x Switch - $249
The Newtonian Dual Arm Power x Switch is usually purchased by Denk II
owners and is the same Power x Switch found in the Denk II Universal
Power x Switch Package. This instant magnification changer is also
included with 2" Newtonian Power x Switch Packages, and allows three
instant magnifications: a must for those
climbing ladders in the dark! Stay up and view each object at three
magnifcations with one pair of eyepieces instantly. If you currently use a 2" Newtonian
OCS with no Power x Switch, you most likely also have a Hollow 2" Nosepiece. This must be used with the
Power x Switch in order for proper functions to occur. The 2" nosepiece
that contains an optic must be removed from the Newtonian OCS assembly.
For those who do not have a Hollow 2" Nosepiece, the internal optic may
certainly be removed so that the nosepiece with optic becomes a 2" Hollow Nosepiece without optic.
Basically, all Power x Switches
thread directly into the binoviewer and the Newtonian OCS with Hollow
Nosepiece threads into the Power x
Switch therafter. The illustration
shows the three basic parts to the Newtonian OCS. They have been
seperated to clearly show the divisions for illustration purposes. It
is the Hollow Nosepiece on the far right that we are concerned with. If
this Newtonian OCS were used without a Power x Switch, the optic
normally contained within the Power x Switch would then need to be in
the 2" Nosepiece for low power mode to occur. Because the Power x Switch does in fact now carry
this optic, the 2" Hollow Nosepiece used in combination with the Middle
Spacer Tube and the OCS Cell must not contain the optic.
If A Hollow Nosepiece Is Needed
There are a few options available to those who do not have a
Hollow 2" Nosepiece. A selection at checkout is available for any
option.
- Return the 2" Nosepiece with optic to us and
we will remove the optic and then install it in your Power x Switch. We
will return the now Hollow 2"
Nosepiece threaded to the Dual Arm Power x
Switch and install the optic previously housed in the returned
nosepiece, into the Power x Switch and we will add a second optic on
the opposite side of the Power x Switch for 2X
magnification. We will discount your Purchase by $25.
- Remove the optic from your 2" Nosepiece yourself. This can be
difficult without the correct spanner tool and damage of the internal
optic is likely to result, though it will not be necessary to use it
again once the Power x Switch is delivered.
- Purchase an additional 2" Hollow Nosepiece. We will ship it with
the Power x Switch. For this last option, it is imperative that the proper 2" Nosepiece be ordered.
Ordering An Additional 2" Hollow Nosepiece
Because there are two varieties of threads that we have made in
producing the 2" Hollow Nosepiece used with the 2" Newtonian OCS,
selection of the correct one that will match the threads of your Newtonian OCS Middle Spacer Tube is important or they will not
thread to one another. This is only of importance when using the 2"
Newtonian OCS and either design of Nosepiece will work with Refractors
and SCTs and will accept 48mm male threads of 2" filters etc.
The illustration on the left shows a
"Single-Start" 2" Hollow Nosepiece (right), and a "Two-Start"
Hollow Nosepiece (left). Note that the "Single-Start" thread is
uniform throughout the internal walls of the Nosepiece right to the top
uppermost rim. The "Two-Start" Nosepiece has a larger internal diameter
near the top rim that continues downward for about 3/8ths of an inch. You
must remove your 2" Nosepiece from the 2" OCS and examine the internal
threads in order to determine which Hollow Nosepiece design to choose
before ordering the optional 2" Hollow Nosepiece. You may make the
selection "Single-Start" or "Two-Start" when adding this item to your
shopping cart.
Refractors
It is easy to add a Single Arm or Dual Arm Power x Switch to a Denk Binoviewer being used on you r
Refractor . Just decide whether the Single or Dual Arm Power x Switch is what
you want. The Refractor will be used with your Hollow 1.25" or 2"
nosepiece that will thread directly into either Power x Switch. Using the Dual Arm Power x Switch, three
magnifications result with a Refractor and the magnifications depend on
the OCS optic being used in the star diagonal on the telescope-side.
The OCS optic used in the star diagonal filter threads on the telescope-side must still be
used as always or the Refractor will not focus. Since those with
Standard Refractor Packages
who add the Dual Arm Power x Switch will have a hybrid system,
magnifications may differ from those found in the Manual listed under
Denk II
Refractor Power x Switch Packages. Typically, 1.4X, 2.5X and 3.5X will
result. We encourage you to review the Standard and Denk II
Power x Switch Package Manual on this website. The single arm Power x
Switch will allow two magnifications with your Refractor. A low power
mode of typically 1.4X and a High Power Mode of typically 2.5X will
result. The highest 3.5X power is only present when the Dual Arm Power
x Switch is purchased.
SCTs
With the Dual Arm Power
x Switch, an SCT will obtain Reduction,
Normal and 2X magnifications when used in a typical F/10 SCT. The
Star*Sweeper is now housed within the Power x Switch. With the
Logo-Side Arm "IN", focal reduction will be the result, typically f/6.6
in an F/10 SCT. Normal power occurs with both arms "OUT" and 2X
occurs with the Non-Logo side arm "IN".
